Urban unemployment: how can urban employment be increased?

Urban unemployment rate rose 1.5 percentage points from 8.8 per cent in 2016-17 to 10.3 per cent in 2017-18. This was mainly due to a rise in the number of unemployed persons in the age group 15-59 years. In this regard, the employment rate in rural India increased by 0.4 percentage point while that in urban India decreased by 2.6 percentage points. The state of Uttar Pradesh had the highest urban unemployment rate at 12.1 per cent in 2017- 18, followed by Bihar (10.9 per cent), Rajasthan (7.7 per cent) and Maharashtra (7.0 per cent). There has been a significant change in the composition of urban unemployment. While male employees formed 53.2 per cent of total urban unemployment in 2016-17, their share dropped to 51.8 per cent in 2017-19. On the other hand, female employees constituted 46.8 per cent of total urban employment in 2016-17 but fell to 45.2 per cent in 2017- 19.

In what ways can employment be increased in urban areas: 

  • Entrepreneurship is the first step towards generating new jobs and is the best way to get people out of poverty. An entrepreneur creates something that has never been created before. They are able to do this because they have both knowledge and capital and also can help create more jobs. 
  • Green jobs are employment opportunities that contribute to environmental sustainability. These jobs often involve working with nature, and they tend to have lower levels of stress than other types of work. Examples include horticulture, forestry, animal husbandry, fishing, hunting, and conservation. Many green jobs do not require a college degree, although some people choose to pursue higher education in order to become better qualified for these positions. 
  • Cities can also use zoning laws to promote business expansion. Zoning laws regulate how land is used and where certain types of businesses can operate. They can either allow only specific types of businesses to operate in a particular area or they can allow any type of business to operate. 
  • Other methods that cities use to encourage business expansion include building infrastructure. Infrastructure includes roads, bridges, water systems, and other utilities. By improving the quality of life in urban areas, businesses are more likely to locate there. 
  • Innovation is the fifth step towards generating new jobs. In order to innovate, we need to have access to capital. However, innovation requires time and resources. Without these two things, we cannot make any progress. 

Motivating employees under adverse conditions: 

Motivation is the drive that makes people want to do something. In the workplace, motivation can be defined as the desire to achieve goals. If your employees are not motivated, they may not perform at their best. This could lead to poor productivity and lower morale. When we talk about motivation, we are talking about the drive that someone has to do something. This can range from being motivated to get out of bed in the morning to wanting to go to work every day. In order to motivate employees, companies need to understand what motivates them and then use this information to create a motivating environment. 

1. Stress 

Stress is defined as any negative emotional state caused by external factors. When people experience stress, they become anxious, nervous, irritated, etc. Stress can come from many different things including financial problems, relationship issues, health concerns, and even job-related stress. If your company does not have an effective way to deal with employee stress, it could lead to lower productivity and higher turnover rates. Company should introduce daily sessions which help employee to learn how to tackle stress. 

2. Reward

A reward system should be implemented to encourage positive behaviour and discourage bad behaviour. Rewards are especially effective at motivating employees if they are tied to performance goals. 

3. Recognition 

Recognition is the act of acknowledging someone’s efforts and achievements. This could be done through verbal praise, monetary rewards, or even awards. When you recognize employees for their challenging work, they feel appreciated and valued. They will then have a greater desire to continue working towards achieving goals. 

4. Autonomy 

Autonomy refers to giving employees freedom to make decisions without being told what to do. Employees who feel empowered to make decisions are motivated to perform better. They are able to take initiative and solve problems independently.

Learning opportunities are defined as any type of training that can be used to enhance your knowledge base. This could include formal courses, workshops, seminars, webinars, etc. These types of activities are great ways to learn about new topics and expand your skill set. They also allow employees to develop their own skillset while helping them advance within their current role. Learning opportunities are not only beneficial to employees but they can also benefit your company. Employees who have access to training programs that allow them to learn new skills and develop their career are more likely to stay at your company. In addition, companies that provide opportunities for employees to gain experience and knowledge are less likely to lose talent to other companies.
