Rustam Patell, the architect and designer of The Taj Mahal Tower, worked within the L-shaped structure which was conceived of by the American architect Melton Bekker; to create this landmark edifice. Bekker incorporated Indian design elements such as Tanjore pillars from the South and arched balconies from Rajasthan into the distinctive tower which is crowned with a jagged diadem. This luxury hotel opened its doors to guests in 1973 and instantly became an inalienable part of the Mumbai cityscape.
